Zoe McGivern is a Perth based trumpet player who graduated from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts with a Bachelor of Music in 2017. She studied under the tutelage of Brent Grapes, principal trumpet of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra for four years. From there she played with the:

  • West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO)

  • Perth Symphony Orchestra (PSO)

  • Fremantle Chamber Orchestra (FCO)

  • West Australian Youth Orchestra (WAYO) who toured Singapore and Japan in 2016 playing Mahler’s 1st Symphony.

  • West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) who toured regionally across Geraldton and Albany

  • WA Doctors Orchestra

  • Perth Symphonic Chorus

  • OperaBox and Perth Orchestra Project

In 2019 Zoe won a scholarship to further her studies at the University of Tasmania with the inspiring Yoram Levy, graduating with First Class Honours. She researched the physiology of playing brass instruments, and explored techniques of finding the most resonant sound through MRI technology and vowel sounds. She was also a finalist in the prestigious University of Tasmania OSSA Musical Prize where she performed the Kent Kennan Trumpet Sonata. During her studies she performed side by side with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO) and Tasmanian Youth Orchestra (TYO) playing Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony.

Upon her return to Perth she has been much sought after, performing in:

  • Top musical productions like Boy from Oz and Legally Blonde

  • Artemis - Perth’s all women jazz orchestra

  • The Perth Symphony Orchestra (PSO) and

  • The West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO).

She is also a founding member of the newly emerging Banksia ensemble, and a long-time player and committee member for the West Coast Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also appeared with Perth’s new brass ensembles Black Swan Brass and Bulwer Street Brass.

Zoe is a highly regarded trumpet teacher working at numerous schools and tutors privately, encouraging the next generation of trumpet players. In her spare time, she is a support worker where she incorporates music as an activity to maintain muscle memory. She encourages movement and singing to music that clients have fond memories of, to help form a consistent drum beat, humming to a melody, and understand the storytelling side of the lyrics.

She is looking forward to continuing to perform more this year, and take as many opportunities as she can. It has been a major goal of hers to perform in front of an orchestra, particularly playing the Arutiunian Trumpet Concerto. Zoe is very excited to have been selected as a MetSO Young Artist for 2021, to perform the Arutiunian with The Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. This year Zoe is also looking forward to playing in new emerging ensembles like Banksia, playing The Planets with the West Coast Philharmonic Orchestra and expanding her versatility amongst Perth’s music community.
