On The Podium 2025/26

MetSO’s Inaugural On The Podium Program.

This program will entail 2 “work experience” mentored conducting placements :

  • A 4 week placement (Oct/Nov 2025) with MetSO Chamber - under the guidance of Conductor / Virtuoso Violinist Ronald Thomas AM.
    Ronald not only won the Carl Flesch Medal which launched his solo career, he has conducted many and varied ensembles during his prestigeous career - the Sydney Opera House Orchestra, Melbourne Opera Orchestra, WASO, Anglican Chamber Orchestra (formerly Peterborough), Bournemouth Sinfonietta, London Mozart Players, New London Soloists … the list goes on.
    Ronald has worked with / performed violin concertos with some of the world’s greats : Sir Adrian Bolt, Sir Charles Groves, Sir Neville Mariner, Sir George Solti, Andre Previn, Daniel Barenboim (he was at the Barenboim/duPre engagement party!). If you are lucky, he may let you have a waft with Lord Menuhin’s baton.

  • A 6-8 week placement (Feb/March 2026) with the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra - under the guidance of MetSO Distinguished Conductor Bruce Herriman
    The amazing Bruce Herriman is synonymous with Perth Music! He is a consummate role model for any aspiring conductor.

Both placements will include On the Podium experience at both rehearsals, and at performances (community settings, and at the beautiful Taryn Fiebig Concert Hall - Churchlands SHS).

N.B. MetSO has podium placements across our many ensembles : Metropolitan Symphony (est. 1977), MetSO Chamber Orchestra, MetSO Intermediate String Orchestra (MISO), and Avanti - Entry level String Ensemble.

The assessment panel will include both of our distinguished conductor / mentors for the program, and MetSO Executive Committee members.
